In Kamchatka, modern sanitary modules are now installed along popular tourist routes. They are not installed for no reason — this is a response to a real problem. There are more and more tourists on the peninsula, but the infrastructure in the wild areas is almost undeveloped. As a result, people are forced to cope with basic needs as best they can, and this takes a toll on nature.
The modules are installed in the most in‑demand locations — where classic routes pass, where groups are led, and where people make stops. And not only on easy trails. Some modules are located in places that take half a day to reach. This is important: if a point is needed, it is installed, even if the location is remote.
Inside, everything is to the point. A toilet, a sink, a place to wash your hands, and sometimes a small vestibule to keep out drafts. Nothing superfluous. At the same time, the structures are designed to withstand Kamchatka weather: wind, snow, temperature fluctuations. Metal, insulation, sealed joints — everything is done so that the module will last for more than one season.
Another important nuance is that the modules are not dependent on central networks. They don’t need city pipes and wires. They work спокойно in remote areas where there is no infrastructure at all. But this doesn’t mean they are forgotten. Regular maintenance has been established for the modules: they are washed, sanitized, water is delivered, and waste is removed. This is a separate job, and it is carried out according to a schedule. Otherwise, the module will quickly stop being convenient and become a problem.
Tourists react calmly but positively. Not everyone notices right away, but when the module comes in handy, people appreciate it. Especially on long routes, where every extra kilogram in the backpack counts. You don’t need to take extra hygiene supplies with you or think about where to stop. And for tour organizers, this is a plus: it’s easier to plan stops, and there are fewer risks due to everyday difficulties.
For nature, such modules are also a help. When people have a proper place, they go into the forest less often and disturb the soil and vegetation less. And there’s less waste: everything is collected and removed, rather than left on the trail.
Installing these modules is part of a large‑scale effort to develop the region’s tourism infrastructure. This is especially important in areas where there are no permanent bases or campsites. In remote natural areas, this approach really helps — it provides tourists with a minimum of amenities and at the same time helps protect nature.
This isn’t an attempt to turn wild trails into city streets. It simply provides minimal comfort where it’s really needed. And they do it in such a way as not to spoil the place, but to help preserve it.
