An earthquake is one of the most destructive natural phenomena, especially in such seismically active regions as Kamchatka. Knowing how to behave properly during an earthquake can save the lives of you and your loved ones. In this blog, we will talk about the key rules of behavior during an earthquake.
Talk to your family and make a plan of action in case of an earthquake. Identify safe places in the house: under strong tables or against interior walls away from windows.
During an earthquake
If you are inside a building:
1. Stay inside
Do not run outside during aftershocks — this can be dangerous due to falling objects and debris.
2. Find shelter
Hide under strong furniture or stand in a doorway (if it is a load-bearing structure). Protect your head with your hands or a pillow.
3. Stay away from windows
Windows can break and cause injuries.
If you are outside:
1. Find an open space
Move away from buildings, trees, bridges, and power lines — all of which can collapse during a strong aftershock.
2. Lie down on the ground
If you can't get to safety, quickly lie face down on the ground and protect your head with your hands until the tremors stop.
After the earthquake
Evaluate the situation:
- Check yourself and others for injuries.
- Provide first aid to the injured.
- Be prepared for aftershocks.
Check your security:
- Inspect the building – if it is damaged or there are gas/water leaks – leave it.
- Do not use elevators – they may get stuck or break down.
Connection:
- Use your phone only for emergency calls.
- Share your location via social media or SMS.
